Winter pests: How to be best prepared
How to Get Rid of Winter Pests. Sunshine Coast Pest Management
During winter, there are so many things to look forward to: brief holidays, cooler weather, a refreshing change in season and so on. However, the winter months also bring an entirely new set of pests. Many people believe that the majority of pests hibernate in the winter, but that’s not the case. Bigger animals like reptiles may hide away, but the standard pests like rodents, termites and cockroaches are as present as ever. Instead of hibernate, these pests oftentimes seek shelter from the cold weather indoors- which means there is an even higher chance that they’ll end up in your home or place of work. However, there are a few things that you can do to prepare for the winter pests and decrease your chances of an infestation.
● Declutter: Pests like rodents and spiders come inside to keep themselves and their families out of the cold. They instinctively look for dark, undisturbed places to hide and if your home is cluttered, they’ll have many options. Keep your home organized and opt for plastic or metal rather than cardboard boxes if you do need them for storage.
● Keep food preparation areas clean: Food left on the counter is a leading cause of pest infestations any time in the year. However, when pests are already lurking around homes, improperly stored food and dirty countertops can attract rodents, ants and cockroaches on an even larger scale. Be sure to always wipe your counters, empty your trash bins regularly, and keep all food in airtight containers.
● Seal off all entryways: In the cold months, pests will find any way to get inside that they possibly can. Even if you keep your doors and windows closed, most pests can fit in the cracks under your door or around your window sills. Inspect your house for any cracks that lead outside and stuff them with door stoppers or steel wool. If you do like to open your windows in the winter, make sure that you have screens.
The occasional trail of ants or stray cockroach may be unavoidable, but with proper winter preparation, you can avoid a severe pest infestation. During the winter months, you likely have extra expenses like an increased heating bill, the need to buy some warm clothes and so forth. The last thing you need is a hefty pest removal bill because you didn’t adequately prepare for the change in seasons. If you follow these tips from our pest control experts, you can rest assured that you won’t be spending your winter fighting off annoying pests.
